How to Be Brave - In a Crisis

Walking in truth and courage is the shortest path to feeling beautiful.

We’re in the middle of an unprecedented pandemic — and it’s scary.

  • organizations are cancelling events that place financial losses in the billions.

  • people are being instructed to stay at home unless absolutely necessary

  • new school closings are being announced on a daily basis, ranging from elementary schools through prestigious universities

Even the most calm among us have to sit up and take notice at a time like this.

The fact is, it’s not a question of IF we’ll be impacted, but rather a question of HOW.

How will this virus challenge us?

  • in terms of our own health

  • by affecting the health of someone we love

  • financially

  • behaviorally

In a perfect world, (you know the one … where we have all our stuff together) when something like this appears, we’d already have our bases covered.

Our health would be so strong that we’d be confident about our body’s natural defenses to kick in … and kick butt.

Our finances would be so cushioned that we wouldn’t worry about how we’ll cover rent while our hours are cut.

And our habits would already be spot on with hygiene that we’d only have to make a few tweaks.

Yet, who among us are perfect? (I’m hoping no one raises their hand.)

We all know there’s no such thing as perfection in our earthly world … though somehow we keep holding ourselves to that standard. Instead, the fact is that …

we are all doing the best we can with the tools we’ve been given.

The difference, however, between those who succeed … vs. those who drown under the pressure … comes down to one thing - our mindset. If we believe that we either ‘can or can’t’, ‘have it or don’t’, then when things get tough, so does the self-talk. Every puffed up moment of confidence in our past collapses under the burden of fear.

… the fear that

we’re not enough

we don’t have what it takes

we are simply too weak

What we need to do instead is build a growth mindset.

It’s a growth mindset that says:

  • I’m not sure how I’ll get through this, but I’ll figure it out

  • even though I’ve struggled with this in the past, it doesn’t mean that I can’t learn to handle it now

  • although this isn’t my strength, I know where to find help

What we’re doing here is claiming the effort.

Results are merely a natural consequence of our efforts.

When we commit to balancing our checkbook every day, we have a strong handle on our finances.

When we commit to hugging our children every day, we build up strong relationship capital to carry us over during conflicts.

When we commit to consistently moving our bodies every day, we have a better finger on the pulse of what it means to feel good inside our own skin (which is why I’m so passionate about our subscription fitness option).

All this said,

if it were as simple as me saying,

“Be brave, stay courageous, have a growth mindset … and everything will be just fine” then we’d all be doing it.

Instead, to change how we think … and to change how we act … requires our willingness to rewire our beliefs, our self-talk, and our actions.
