Getting Ready for Summer - Part 1: Step into the Sunshine
Over the next five weeks, I’ll share with you what YOU need to do to get ready for summer.
My story of achieving a body I feel comfortable in, has its roots in an annual springtime fear of being seen.
Beginning around the age of 12, and by the end of February each year, I’d start to have a looming and gnawing discomfort of:
being invited to a pool party, and having to wear a bathing suit
it being so hot outside that I’d need to wear shorts instead of pants
someone noticing my legs and making a negative comment
That anxiety would last from spring until the relief of autumn … when I could finally let down my guard and focus instead on the cherished fall fashions of sweaters and woolen plaids.
This pattern would repeat itself for years to come in varying degrees of intensity … hitting a peak at the age of 16, but never completely going away until my early 40s.
I’m dedicating the month of February, in honor of my 30 years of suffering through self-conscious dread to helping you wrap your heart, mind, and body around what is required to overcome this kind of gripping fear that can prevent us from enjoying the life we’ve been given.
The first thing you need to do is step out into the sunshine.
I mean this literally and figuratively.
step outside your door and let the sunshine beat upon your face.
let the warmth of every beautiful sight impact you.
look for and allow yourself to receive any kindness you find in your day.
open your heart and mind to receive any beams of sunshine that cross your path.
do all of this, by going for a daily walk.
Then you are going to take a deep breath and feel what it’s like to just be.
Before we can achieve our most cherished dreams, we must start from where we are today. And the most powerful way to learn where we are is to literally move our bodies.
Find out where you are today and observe:
what do you see?
what do you notice?
how do you feel?
how do you react?
what do you hear?
what do you feel through touch?
Commit to stepping into the sunshine for the next month. Literally step outside your door and observe what it’s like to live inside your own body.
“Take one step. Then another. Find the win. Take another step. Discover how it feels to gain success and excellence on your own. Keep moving forward.”
