Beauty is Our Birthright

Before sitting down to write a blog, I’ll often look up a quote that supports or enlightens what I’d like to express.

Today, I typed into the search: “Beauty as birthright”.

Instead of a collection to choose from, I found one repeated over and over by Elizabeth Arden:
“To be beautiful is the birthright of every woman.”

As an empress of cosmetics, she wasn’t exactly the ambassador I was looking for.

*****

In that case…what exactly do I mean when I say that beauty is our birthright?

Here’s what I’m saying:

  • self-hate is learnedas is self-admiration

  • to feel beautiful within our own skin is at the core of self-care

  • we are what we see in this world through our own eyes…not what anyone else sees in us

  • as we perceive beauty in this world…we experience beauty within ourselves

    **********************************

To be more specific:

true beauty radiates from an intimate belief that
we are already perfect

And that self-admiration and self-hate are two sides of the same coin of self idolatry.

**************************************

Just like every other human, I have plenty of first hand experience idolizing myself through:

  • self-hate

  • self-admiration

Yet, I also have a third understanding of my place in this world that is much bigger than myself, and is

. . . untouched by public opinion

. . . and not dependent on my ego.

It is a place of:

safety

self-care

purpose

And to ground myself in it, eliminates:

fear

neglect

pettiness

*******************************************

You see, each and every one of us has a gift of beauty . . .

so we must take care of ourselves.

It wasn’t meant to be used as a tool to manipulate others.

************

It was given to us so that we would care:

  • about our health

  • about one another

  • about the world we live in

***********************************************

One of the first steps we have to take in our fitness journey is to soften our grip on what outcome we expect.

And begin to understand that our experience of beauty has nothing to do with the size of our pants, and everything to do with self-care . . . we free ourselves to own all parts of ourselves:

the good

the bad

and yes, the parts that we once (and still sometimes do) considered ugly

And only then can we experience the Beauty that is our Birthright.
